Light inched further from all familiar things as the sun set slow beyond the treeline. A lone yote mongrel with farm-dog scent weaved briskly through the crags and brush of Eastern Oregon. Her lithe figure wrestled with the burden of a collie's coat; thick and matted with mud and lichen, laden with fleas. Blackberry brambles trailed beneath her like a bridal train.Tonight, home is rock walls and low branches of Juniper. Someone who came before dug a shallow in the soil, leaving behind the scent of badger. This is where she lay, held by the earth as stars blink into being across a cool blue sky (she knows no different). She releases the day's tension with a shuddering yawn and shift of focus to the ache between her paw pads. Foxtail awns; long, sharp, yearning to be carried far from here before the fall. She picks delicately with front teeth, extracting one by one. It's a tedious process, but relaxing. She'll soon be asleep beside a pile of tawny seeds, tipped red with blood. She'll dream, but not for long. Two hours to rest. Six miles to sunrise.
